Pakistan: Some 800 people are believed to have died in the worst monsoon floods

Ref: Fears are growing in Pakistan that floods which have hit one million people could spread out of the country’s ravaged north-west.

Some 800 people are believed to have died in the worst monsoon floods in living memory.

Officials say 19,000 people in the worst-hit areas have been rescued by 30,000 troops.

But there are now concerns that if forecast heavy rain arrives it will push the flood south to Sindh province.

Currently Peshawar, the largest city in the north-western region, with a 3m-strong population, is cut off. Read more →

RMG protests enter 3rd day

Ref: Garment workers have taken to the streets for the third consecutive day, with hundreds of RMG workers laying siege to the Dhaka-Tangail Highway at Ashulia demanding a minimum wage of Tk 5,000.

Police officials report that over one thousand RMG workers came out on the roads at Jamgara in Ashulia bringing the traffic to a halt.

Clashes erupted in the Jamgara area when police tried to disperse the protesters off the streets. Read more →
