Sharfuddin Rangpur’s maiden Mayor

Ref: Awami League-backed Nagarik Committee candidate Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu has become the first Mayor of the newly constituted Rangpur City Corporation.

Jhantu, contesting with motorcycle logo, secured 106,255 votes in 178 centres to seal the victory. His nearest rival, renegade Jatiya Party leader, District Convenor of newly-formed Trinamul Jatiya Party’s Mostafizur Rahman Mostafa (Duck) polled 77,805 votes.

Counting of votes began at 4:30pm after the maiden polls of the newly-constituted Rangpur City Corporation ended on Thursday.

Egyptian Islamists plan big rally as referendum looms

Ref: Egyptian Islamists are planning a mass protest in Alexandria on Friday in a move likely to raise tensions on the eve of a divisive referendum that will determine the political future of the Arab world’s biggest nation.

The Muslim Brotherhood called for the rally after a violent confrontation between Islamists and the liberal, secular opposition in Egypt’s second city last week ended with a Muslim preacher besieged inside his mosque for 14 hours. Rival factions were armed with clubs, knives and swords.

The run-up to the referendum on a new draft constitution has been marked by often violent protests in which at least eight people have died. Read more →

Rajshahi shutdown begin with explosions

Islami Chhatra Shibir activists hurled locally-made bombs on a police car on Wednesday at the start of the half-day strike in Rajshahi.

At least seven persons, including three policemen, were injured in explosions and attacks.

The strike has been called to protest the arrest of Jamaat-e-Islami Central Publicity Secretary Tasim Alam.

Jamaat supporters hurled bombs on the police car near Rajshahi University gate in Kajla area. The injured were locally hospitalised.

Sylhet strike starts with blasts

Ref: The half-day shutdown in Sylhet began with vandalism and explosions amidst a tense stand-off between strike supporters and the police.

Jamaat-e-Islami has called for the shutdown protesting against arrest of its’s top leaders including its Acting Secretary General Shafiqur Rahman. The shutdown enforced from 6am is on until 2:00pm.

Jamaat and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir activists were seen taking out processions in the city’s Osmani Medical road, Mirabazar and Choukidekhi area around 7:00am.

Pro-shutdown activists set fire to tyres and blocked the Osmani Medical road around 6:30am. Police chased them away but the activists returned again to set up pickets . Read more →

Rangpur city awaits maiden polls

A festive mood has gripped this city a day before its first city corporation polls.

Rangpur’s civic body was upgraded to a City Corporation this year. Voters are therefore expectedly enthusiastic and keen to exercise their ballot.

The city’s grapevine is abuzz with speculations about who will be Rangpur’s Mayor. However, in view of the uncertain national situation, tension prevails here and the administration says it had arranged for tight security.

Police patrols were frequent.

Public transport was barred from polling zones from Monday midnight and only police, media and mobile court vehicles are allowed. Read more →

Dawn to dusk hartal underway

A procession in support of hartal was brought out led by CPB presidium member Ahsan Habib Lovelu and workers’ leader Mantu Ghos from CPB Purana Paltan central office around 5:45am, banglanews correspondent reports.

Another pro-hartal procession was brought out by Bangladesh Chhatra Union from its Topkhana road central office around 6:00am and they paraded press club, Paltan, Segunbagicha areas, a spot account said.

BSD led-by its general secretary comrade Khalekuzzaman brought out a procession which paraded also Paltan, Dainik Bangla, Press Club areas.

All procession terminated in city’s Paltan intersection and leaders are addressing here in support of hartal.

Fakhrul’s bail plea hearing Dec 24

Ref The hearing on bail prayer of opposition BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will be held on December 24.

Advocate Sanaullah Mia filed two separate bail petitions with the vacation court of Metropolitan Session Judge Md Helal Uddin Tuesday morning.

The court fixed December 24 for the hearing on the bail petitions seeking documents of the cases.

On December 11, the court sent opposition Mirza Fakhrul   to jail in cases of vandalism and torching vehicles during Sunday’s countrywide road blockade. Read more →

4 motorcyclists killed in Munshiganj

REF: Four motorcyclists were killed in a road accident on Dhaka-Mawa highway in Samashpur under Sreenagar upazila of the district on Sunday night.

‘Trials before next Victory Day’

Ref: LGRD and Co-operatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam has said it should be possible to finish the ongoing war crimes trials before the next Victory Day.

“By the grace of Allah, we will finish the war crimes trials before the next Victory Day and the verdicts will also be implemented,” Ashraf, also the ruling Awami League General Secretary, told journalists on Sunday, after offering his tribute at the National Memorial in Savar on the 42nd Victory Day.
