Govt killing people through violence: Khaleda

REF: BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Saturday asked the people to join the opposition’s movement to oust the present government alleging that it was on a spree to ‘kill people’ across the country.

“The present government is destroying the country through theft, corruption and loot. They are on a rampage and killing people,” she said while addressing a street rally at Brahmanbaria’s tornado-hit Chinair village in the afternoon.

Padma bridge with own funds, says Muhith

REF: Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Saturday said Bangladesh plans to bridge the mighty Padma with its ‘own resources’ and Tk 68.52 billion will be allocated for the purpose in the forthcoming budget.


That would mean just under one-third of the project cost would be earmarked for the $2.9-billion prestigious project in the national budget.

5 die in Jamaat-cops clashes

REF: At least five people were shot dead on Friday after Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP supporters attacked police during in Chapainawabganj and Sirajganj.


The clashes broke out after the law enforcers came under attack when they tried to arrest suspects.Three died in Chapainawabganj’s Shibganj Upazila and two at Belkuchi Upazila in Sirajganj district.

Islami Andolan says Jamaat ‘defaming’ Islam

REF: The Islami Andolan on Friday accused the Jamaat-e-Islami of ‘defaming Islam’ and said the outfit, which opposed Bangladesh’s independence, had an ‘impaired view’ of the religion.Addressing a rally at the capital’s Motijheel Shapla Intersection, Secretary General of Islami Andolan Prof Maulana Yunus Ahmad said supporting the Jamaat was like ‘siding with the wrong’.
The rally was held to press for the party’s five-point charter of demands.Speakers at the rally said the Jamaat-e-Islami was a big threat to the nation and its independence.

Ref: DHAKA: The High Court on Wednesday issued rule upon the President of Awami League and Chairperson of BNP to explain within four weeks why they “shall not be directed to hold political dialogue between them and their alliances in and outside the parliament to resolve the present political crisis with respect to ensuring general election of the parliament in a free and fair manner”.

Blasts near BNP HQ, Ctg schoolgirl hurt

Ref: Some crude bombs exploded near BNP Naya Paltan headquarters and Shantinagar in Dhaka on the second day of the Opposition strike on Thursday. A 14-year-old schoolgirl was injured when Jamaat-e-Islami supporters lobed bombs in Chittagong as the strike entered the second day.Three crude bombs were lobbed from a pro-shutdown procession in Battala alley near Nightingle intersection in Dhaka around 8:00am, Paltan Police Station Officer in-Charge Golam Sarwar said.

Death toll rises to 33 in B’baria tornado

Ref: BRAHMANBARIA: Death toll rose to 33 in the tornado that hit Sadar and Bijoynagar upazilas of the district recently.

One of the deceased was identified as Romchan Bibi, 50, wife of Abu Taher of Jarultola village.
The two injured women succumbed to their injuries in Combined Military Hospital in Comilla and Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital on Thursday morning. Read more →

Thana bombed, train torched on strike-eve

Two policemen were injured in a bomb attack on Rajshahi’s Boalia Police Station while a train was set on fire in Mymensingh Railway Station on Tuesday night on the eve of 36-hour shutdown.

The BNP and its allies including the Jamaat-e-Islami are set to enforce the countrywide general strike from 6am on Wednesday. Ahead of general strikes, political parties resort to widespread vandalism and arson to drive fear into people to make them stay indoors and claim the stike call successful.

Rajshahi police bombed twice in 20 minutes

Police in Rajshahi came twice under bomb attack on Tuesday night, leaving three of their personnel injured ahead of the 36-hour shutdown sponsored by the BNP and allies.

Two Rajshahi Medical College fifth-year students Mushfiq Jahan, 25, and Selim Reza, 25, were arrested at the scene, he said.Around 20 minutes later, five crude bombs were hurled in from outside the eastern walls at around 8:20pm, he said. ”Constables Firoz Uddin and Dabir Uddin were injured.
