Caretaker demand in formal dialogue: Moudud

REF:  Myanmar’s government has called for calm after mobs burned down a Muslim orphanage, a mosque and shops during a new eruption of religious violence in the northeastern Shan state.

At least one person has died and four others were injured, state television said.Authorities imposed a curfew late on Tuesday in Lashio, about 700km northeast of Yangon, after a mob of 200 local residents surrounded a local police station demanding they hand over a Muslim detainee.

Muslims and Buddhists clash in northern Myanmar

REF:  Muslims and Buddhists clashed in Myanmar’s northern city of Lashio on Tuesday, witnesses said, as a wave of sectarian violence reached a mountainous region near China’s border.

 

Phone lines were down in the city of about 131,000 people and the extent of the violence was unclear. Witnesses reported several large fires and said a mosque and Buddhist monastery appear to have been torched.

Girls from CNN Freedom Project help bust U.S. child pornographer

REF:  A convicted child pornographer in Pennsylvania was sentenced Tuesday to 12 years in federal prison, thanks in part to three girls featured in CNN’s Freedom Project who provided information to U.S. authorities.

Jeffrey Herschell, 54, of Washington, Pennsylvania, visited an Internet site that showed live sex shows that forced young girls in the Philippines to act out customers’ fantasies, U.S. investigators said.

Huge anti-gay marriage protest march in Paris

REF:  Tens of thousands of people have rallied in Paris against a new French law allowing same-sex marriage.

REF:  A Dhaka Court Sunday issued arrest warrant against BNP senior vice chairman Tarrique Rahman in a graft case. It also allowed the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to take help from Interpol in this connection.

Acting Judge of Dhaka-3 Special Court Mozammel Haque passed the order in response to a petition of the ACC. Earlier in the day, ACC lawyer Mosarraf Hossain Kajol filed the petition with the court seeking issuance of an arrest warrant against Tarique in English and also permission to take help of Interpol in this regard.

US hands over naval ship

REF:  The United States has officially handed over a naval ship to Bangladesh in a reflagging ceremony in California.

According to a media release, the US Coast Guard officially decommissioned ‘Cutter Jarvis’ and transferred it to the Bangladesh Navy after renaming it as ‘BNS Somudro Joy’, in a ceremony at Coast Guard Island in Alameda, California on Thursday local time.
