Iraqi advance moves slowly on ISIL-held Tikrit

REF: Iraqi forces battling the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group have warned the operation to retake Tikrit will not be quick, with areas in and around the city “littered with bombs and booby-traps”.

Assurances not enough for Barguna Hindus

REF: Despite the arrest of an accused and repeated assurances by the district administration, the uprooted Hindus are unwilling to return to Taltoli in Barguna.

“We are trying to bring them back to their hearth and homes,” says Barguna Deputy Commissioner Mir Zahurul Islam.
“If needed, we will build houses for them with government funds,” he said.

Houthis told to ‘surrender’ at Arab League summit

REF: Yemen’s president has called on Houthi fighters to “surrender” at a meeting of the Arab League in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh, as Saudi-led air raids continued to strike the group’s positions for a third day.

Saudi-led air strikes hit Yemen for third night

REF: Saudi-led coalition troops have bombed Houthi targets in Yemen for a third consecutive night, and claim to be in complete control of Yemen’s airspace.

The air strikes early on Saturday hit targets in the city of Hudaydah on the Red Sea Coast, the Houthi stronghold of Saada in the north, and military installations in and around the capital Sanaa.

Rumour triggers stampede at Bangladesh’s Hindu holy bath site in Narayanganj, witnesses say

REF: Devotees taking a Hindu holy bath in Bangladesh’s Narayanganj say rumour about a bailey bridge collapsing near the main quay triggered panic leading to a stampede that killed 10 people, mostly women.

At least 20 others were injured during the ‘Astami Snan’ incident in the Old Brahmaputra River, at Langalbandh, on Friday.

Former police officer’s wife, maid killed in Jatrabarhi

REF: Raushan Ara, wife of late additional superintendent of police Abdul Kuddus, was in her 60s while the maid, ‘Kalpana’, was 12 years old.

Police said their throats were slashed on Tuesday.Raushan lived on the first floor of the house with her maidservants Lucky Akter and Lucky’s daughter ‘Kalpana’.

150 feared dead after plane crashes in French Alps

REF: All 150 passengers and crew on board an Airbus plane operated by Germanwings are presumed dead after the aircraft crashed in the French Alps region.

There is no hope of finding any survivors, French police said on Tuesday.

Yemen crisis talks to be held in Doha, says UN

REF: UN-brokered talks aimed at resolving the escalating political crisis in Yemen will be held in Doha, the UN envoy to Yemen has said, after the internationally recognised Yemeni government appealed to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) for military assistance.

A day after warning the UN Security Council that Yemen was on the brink of civil war, Jamal Benomar announced on Monday that talks between the Yemeni parties would take place in the Qatari capital, and that any agreement reached would be signed in Riyadh.

Manjur to run again for Chittagong mayor if BNP decides to join city elections

REF: The leaders dropped a broad hint on Monday that they will keep faith in Alam to take on Awami League-backed contender AJM Nasir Uddin.

Manjur told, “If the party decides to take part in the election and supports me, then I will contest.”His son, Sorowar Alam, said, “We are waiting for the party’s decision from the centre.”
