Truck driver robbed and stabbed to death at Tongi

REF: Muggers have decamped with money and mobile-phone after stabbing a truck driver to death at Gazipur’s Tongi.The murder took place in Bastuhara area early on Sunday, Tongi Police Station Sub-Inspector Sumon Bhakto said.

The murdered Bulbul Ahmed, 26, was driving a cement-laden truck from Naraynganj to Bogra.Quoting his assistant Tajel Mia, Bhakto said Ahmed took a break at Tongi around 3am.

Myanmar deflects blame for Rohingya migrant crisis

REF: Myanmar refused to shoulder blame for an escalating migrant crisis and cast doubts on whether it will attend a summit in Thailand later this month aimed at easing an emergency that has left thousands of refugees stranded at sea.

“We are not ignoring the migrant problem, but our leaders will decide whether to attend the meeting based on what is going to be discussed,” said Major Zaw Htay, director of the office of Myanmar’s president.

BNP aide meets Salahuddin in Shillong, police question him

REF: BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed has told Meghalaya state police that he was confined in a small room of a house for a long time after his abduction from Dhaka.


Special Branch officials in Shillong told that the BNP leader told them that the kidnappers later blindfolded him and drove him around for a few days, changing vehicles frequently.

ISIL seizes main government compound in Iraq’s Ramadi

REF: The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group has taken over the main government compound in the western Iraqi city of Ramadi, and edged closer to what would be their biggest victory in Iraq this year, officials have said.


Hikmat Suleiman, the spokesman for Anbar’s governor, told Al Jazeera that the fighters managed to seize the heavily fortified complex on Friday mainly due to a lack of backing from the central Baghdad government.

Interpol notice to bring back Salahuddin for cases in Bangladesh

REF: Interpol’s Dhaka unit has sent a request to India with a ‘red corner’ notice to arrest and repatriate the man who claims to be BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed, says the ‘Telegraph’ of Kolkata.

Meghalaya police director general Rajiv Mehta told the ‘Telegraph’ that Interpol Dhaka unit has sent this request, saying Salahuddin was wanted in connection with several criminal cases in Bangladesh .

Several foreigners killed in attack on Kabul guesthouse

REF: A US citizen and two Indian nationals are reported to be among five people killed after gunmen stormed a guesthouse in the Afghan capital as it hosted a party for foreigners.

Al Jazeera’s Jennifer Glasse, reporting from Kabul, said special forces from the Crisis Response Unit had now retaken the building, clearing the guesthouse room by room.

BNP leader Salahuddin says he was kidnapped from Uttara

REF : Salahuddin Ahmed, the joint secretary general of BNP who went missing for over two months, says he does not know how he surfaced in this mountainous state capital of Meghalaya on Monday morning.

Ahmed, who identified himself as a senior political leader of BNP, claimed that he was kidnapped by unidentified group of people from Uttara in capital Dhaka on the night of March 10.

Third Bangladeshi blogger hacked to death

REF: A masked gang wielding machetes has hacked a blogger to death in northeastern Bangladesh in the third such deadly attack since the start of the year, police said.

Ananta Bijoy Das was killed in the Subid Bazar area of Sylhet city as he walked to work at around 8:40am on Tuesday morning, Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Kamrul Hasan told Al Jazeera.

Strong 6.8-magnitude earthquake hits northeastern Japan

REF: A 6.8-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of northeastern Japan, the US Geological Survey (USGS) has said, but authorities have not issued a tsunami warning and there were no immediate reports of damage.

The quake struck at 6.12am (21:12 GMT Tuesday) off the east coast of Japan’s Honshu island in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of 38.9km, according to USGS.

Police break up protest march towards DMP headquarters

REF: Police have clubbed, teargassed, blasted by water cannon and physically abused demonstrators against recent sexual assault on women at the Dhaka University.

At least 15 students, injured in Sunday’s police brutality during the march towards the Dhaka Metropolitan Police headquarters, were hospitalised.
