Supreme Court seals Salauddin Quader’s fate, confirms death penalty for BNP leader’s war crimes

REF: War-time terror of Chittagong Salauddin Quader Chowdhury will have to hang after the Supreme Court in the final verdict has confirmed the death penalty of the war crimes tribunal.


The four-member appeals bench led by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha delivered the final verdict at 9:03am on Wednesday.The judgment was greeted with huge relief in and outside the courtroom.

Former Indian president APJ Abdul Kalam dies after collapsing at a programme in Shillong

REF: Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, who rose from humble beginnings to become one of India’s leading scientists and later a hugely popular president, has died at a hospital in Shillong, plunging the entire country in mourning.


Kalam, who occupied Rashtrapati Bhavan in 2002-07 as the 11th president, breathed his last at 7:45pm on Monday at the Bethany Hospital.

Powerful earthquake hits Indonesia’s Papua

REF: A magnitude 7.0 earthquake has hit Indonesia’s Papua region, the US Geological Survey says.The quake struck at 6.41am on Monday, almost 250km west of the provincial capital Jayapura.


No tsunami warning was issued after the quake, which struck inland, and Indonesia’s national disaster agency said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

Flood in southeast of Bangladesh may worsen due to heavy rains

REF: The flood situation in the south-eastern districts is feared to worsen for heavy rains.The Met office has forecast it may rain heavily in some parts of Chittagong, Khulna and Barisal divisions due to the seasonal low in the Bay of Bengal.


The Meteorological Department on Sunday advised the maritime ports to keep hoisted local cautionary signal no. three.Lower areas of Feni, Bandarban and Chittagong have been submerged by flash flood.

Al-Shabab attack devastates Mogadishu landmark

REF: At least 10 people have been killed in a car bombing at the gate of a hotel in Mogadishu, the Somali capital.

Ambulance sirens and gunfire were heard on Sunday near the Jazeera Palace Hotel, frequented by government officials and dignitaries and home to several embassies, soon after the blast.

Turkey intensifies campaigns in Iraq and Syria

REF: Turkey has launched more air raids against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Syria and against Kurdish fighters in Iraq.

Saturday’s raids are the latest in a campaign that began early on Friday in response to a suicide bombing at a rally in the southern Turkish city of Suruc earlier in the week that killed dozens of Kurdish activists.

Scores of ISIL child soldiers ‘killed’ in Syria in 2015

REF: More than 50 child soldiers recruited by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group in Syria have been killed since the beginning of this year, a monitoring group reported.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Wednesday it had documented the deaths of 52 child soldiers, all under the age of 16, who had been part of ISIL’s “Cubs of the Caliphate” programme.

At least 25 people dead in Afghanistan suicide blast

REF: At least 25 people have been killed in a suicide car bomb attack near a military base in Afghanistan’s Khost province, where Afghan and foreign soldiers are stationed, authorities say.

Al Jazeera’s Jennifer Glasse, reporting from Kabul, said that the attack happened just before 7pm, when many people were breaking their Ramadan fast.
