Foreign firm fined for hill cutting

Ref: A Chinese firm became the first foreign company to be punished for cutting hills in violation of Bangladesh’s laws.

The Department of Environment (DoE) fined the Chinese firm Tk 1 million for cutting a hill at Mirsarai upazila of the district.

Hill cutting defying environment laws has continued unabated in Chittagong for residential plots or commercial purposes.

4 killed, 50 injured in Khagrachhari tribal-Bengali clash

Ref: Four Bengali settlers were killed and 50 others injured in a violent clash between settlers and indigenous people over land possession at Chankhola village of Bara Tilak Mouja in Ramgarh upazila of the hill district Sunday.

According to local and official sources, the deceased are Ayub Ali, 30, Badiul Alam, 35, Sunial Sarker, 30, and Nawab Ali, 70.

Some of the injured were admitted to Manikchhari Upazila Health Complex in “critical condition”.

Police SI stabbed to death in Ctg

Forest fires burn vast woods in CU area

Ref: Vast woods along with habitats of birds and animals burnt in devastating forest fires on the hills along Kata Pahar road on the hillside Chittagong University campus on Saturday evening.

The blaze could not be tamed till the time this report came at 7:45pm, as wild wind was fanning the fire, witnesses told banglanews.

They said the fire broke out at 4pm behind the BBA faculty building. Later, the wildfire engulfed a vast area of the hill, as firefighters did not put it out ignoring little extent of the fire initially.

Biman aircraft wheels deflate

Ref: Two rear wheels of a Biman aircraft have got deflated during its landing at Cox’s Bazar Airport. All passengers were safe.

The incident occurred around 11am on Thursday when the flight reached Cox’s Bazar Airport, airport authorities said.

Airport manager Mahmud Akhter Hossain told that two tyers of the rear wheels on both sides of the airbus burst shortly after it touched the runway.

Polls to 2 JS seats, 12 municipalities begin

Polling to Brahmanbaria-3 and Habiganj-1 constituencies and 12 municipalities began Thursday morning.

The voting started at about 8:00am and will continue till 4:00pm without any break.
