REF: Three masked gunmen have killed a Japanese man in Bangladesh, the second foreign national to be killed there within a week, raising alarms among the country’s foreign community.
Police said they had detained four suspects in connection with the shooting on Saturday of Kunio Hoshi, 65, in Rangpur district, 335km north of the capital, Dhaka, in an attack similar to the shooting on Tuesday of Italian national Cesare Tavella.

REF: The government has withdrawn VAT on private universities after several days of protests by students who blocked streets in Dhaka and elsewhere, causing mass suffering.
In a statement, the finance ministry said the government was lifting the 7.5 percent VAT that sparked students’ unrest disrupting civic life.
REF: Finance Minister AMA Muhith has hinted that the government may back down on VAT, saying it was ‘not rigid’ about the decision as protests by students of private universities continue.
“We have not taken a rigid position on complications that have arisen at the private universities over the imposed VAT… We have reviewed many issues in the past six years,” he said on Sunday.
REF: An organisation called ‘Bangladesh Awami Sishu (children) League’ has been formed, adding to the long list of over a hundred organisations operating with ‘Awami League’, ‘Bangabandhu’ and ‘Jatir Pita’ in their names.
