Paraguay beat unlucky Venezuela to reach Copa final

Ref: Paraguay rode their luck to hold Venezuela to a goalless draw before prevailing 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out on Wednesday to reach the final of the Copa America for the first time since 1979.

Defender Dario Veron scored the winning spot kick, blasting the ball past Renny Vega to send his side into Sunday’s final against Uruguay in Buenos Aires.

Venezuela were desperately unlucky not to win the match. They hit the woodwork three times and improved as the match went on against a Paraguay side who had midfielder Jonathan Santana sent off in the first period of extra time.

After the match a fight broke out on the pitch involving players and coaching staff from both teams.

Chavez tells of surgery to remove cancerous tumour

Ref: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has revealed he has had surgery to remove a cancerous tumour, in his first speech since flying to Cuba for treatment.

Speculation about his health had been rife since he left Venezuela three weeks ago for what officials said was an operation on a pelvic abscess.

Venezuela cuts ties with Colombia

Ref: Venezuela has broken off diplomatic relations with Colombia after Bogota charged that leftist guerrillas it is fighting are holed up in Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan president, has said.

“I announce with a tear in the heart: Venezuela breaks off from this moment all relations with the government of Colombia,” Chavez told journalists at the presidential palace on Thursday. Read more →
