Protesters killed in Iraqi 'day of rage'

Ref: At least nine people have been killed in anti-government protests in Iraq as thousands take to the streets in cities across the country for a “day of rage”.

Baghdad has been virtually locked down, with the authorities banning traffic in the city centre and deploying several thousand soldiers on the streets.

Still, several hundred people gathered in Baghdad’s own Tahrir Square, calling for reform, but not regime change.

Two bomb blasts strike pilgrims in Iraq city of Karbala

Ref: Two separate car bomb attacks targeting Shia pilgrims in the Iraqi city of Karbala have killed 25 people and injured almost 70, officials say.

Strict security measures are in place for the Karbala pilgrimage

The first blast killed seven people and injured 18 at a terminal filled with buses carrying pilgrims to Karbala.Hours later, another blast on the southern outskirts of the holy city left 18 people dead and 50 injured.

Last week, three suicide bombers killed 56 people and wounded 180 others along pilgrim routes to the city.

Suicide bombers kill four in Iraq police station

Ref: Two suicide bombers on Wednesday killed four policemen in a police station in Iraq`s northern city of Mosul, including an officer who oversaw a deadly raid on militants, security officials said.

A third bomber was shot dead before setting off his explosives belt in the attack targeting Lieutenant Colonel Shamil Ahmed Oglah, who commanded the operation last week against an Al-Qaeda affiliate, a police officer said. Read more →

Ref: A newly-leaked US diplomatic cable describes in detail the circumstances of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein`s execution, from guards telling him to “go to hell” to officials taking mobile phone pictures.

Saddam`s execution in December 2006 sparked international controversy after mobile phone video of the sentence being carried out was published on the Internet showing witnesses taunting him as he was about to be hanged.

Bombs kill 13 in Iraq, dozens wounded

Ref: A series of car bomb explosions in the Iraqi capital, two of them targeting Iranian pilgrims, killed at least 13 people and wounded more than 80 others, Interior Ministry and police sources said.

Militants blew up a car bomb in front of a house used by Iranians as a rest stop in the Kadhamiya district of Baghdad, as well as explosives planted in an adjacent house, an Interior Ministry source said.

Talabani against Aziz execution

Ref: Jalal Talabani, the Iraqi president, has said he will not sign an execution order for Tariq Aziz, the former deputy of Saddam Hussein sentenced to death last month over the persecution of Islamic parties.

“No, I will not sign the execution order for Tariq Aziz, because I am a socialist,” Talabani told French television France 24 in an interview on Wednesday.

US urges inclusive Iraq government

Ref: Barack Obama, the US president, has urged Iraqi leaders involved in a fragile power-sharing deal to aim for an “inclusive government” for the country.

The White House said in a statement on Friday that the president spoke in recent days with Iraqi politicians including Ayad Allawi, head of the Sunni-backed Iraqiya bloc, and would be speaking shortly with Nouri al-Maliki, the prime minister.

The statement said Obama stressed the need for Allawi, others from Iraqiya and all the winning blocs to hold leadership posts in the new government. Read more →

Christians killed in Iraq attacks

Ref: A series of bomb and mortar attacks targeting Christians have killed three people and injured 24 others in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, according to police sources.

Attackers detonated at least 14 roadside bombs across the city on Wednesday morning and a mortar round struck in the southern Doura district.
