Hi-tech number plates launched

Ref: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday launched retro-reflective number plates with radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, and digital registration certificates (vehicle ownership card) aiming to bring discipline and improved services in the sector.

She said that the country’s transport sector had entered a new era with the introduction of the retro-reflective number plates with radiofrequency identification tags.

SKorea and India sign nuclear deal

South Korea’s ambitions to enter the Indian energy market have received a big boost as the two countries signed a civil nuclear deal.

The agreement will allow South Korea to export its nuclear energy technology to India.

The deal comes at a time when India has been struggling to keep up its energy supply to meet the increased demand in wake of its rapid expansion.

South Korea is the ninth country to sign a nuclear deal with India.

“We look forward to Republic of Korea becoming one more partner in the development of civil nuclear energy in India,” said Sanjay Singh, Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs, India.

E-governance within few years, says Ashraf

Ref: Syed Ashraful Islam, minister for local government and rural development, informed parliament that it would be possible to implement e-governance in the country within a few years for bringing dynamism in the public administration.

Ashraful, who is also the designated spokesperson for the ministry of public administration, said this while answering to a question raised by Moshtaq Ahmed Ruhi MP in the question-answer session of the parliament Tuesday.

Airtel launches international video calling services on 3-G

Ref: Bharti Airtel, a leading global telecommunications company with operations in 19 countries across Asia and Africa, Monday launched its International Video Calling capabilities on 3-G facility, said a press release.

With the newly introduced calling capacities, Airtel 3-G mobile customers in India would now be able to leverage Airtel internet on 3-G to make international video calls and interact face-to-face with their loved ones and colleagues living abroad-instantly sharing experiences and information.

Google faces damages claim from French competitor 1PlusV

Ref: French search engine company 1PlusV said it is suing Google for 295 million euros ($417.7), alleging the company used its market dominance to block the development of alternative services.

The French company is one of four, including Microsoft, that has accused Google of abusing its dominant position by demoting rival sites in search results and giving preference to its own services. The allegation has triggered an investigation by the European Commission.

Nokia loses another technology chief

Ref: Nokia`s chief technology officer Rich Green has taken a leave of absence from the mobile phone giant.

An official Nokia statement said he had left to resolve a “personal matter” and gave no date for his return.

However, a Finnish newspaper quoted sources inside Nokia saying he had left because of differences over strategy and would not return.

Low-priced laptop to hit market in June

Ref: The much-talked-about low-priced laptop of government’s telephone industry will hit the local market in June, said the Telecommunications Minister.

Minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju said Telephone Shilpa Sangstha, an industrial unit under the Ministry of Telecommunications, “is now working hard to introduce such an easily affordable laptop”.

Sites hit in massive web attack

Ref: Hundreds of thousands of websites appear to have been compromised by a massive cyber attack.

The hi-tech criminals used a well-known attack vector that exploits security loopholes on other sites to insert a link to their website.

Those visiting the criminals’ webpage were told that their machines were infected with many different viruses.
