Paraguay beat unlucky Venezuela to reach Copa final

Ref: Paraguay rode their luck to hold Venezuela to a goalless draw before prevailing 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out on Wednesday to reach the final of the Copa America for the first time since 1979.

Defender Dario Veron scored the winning spot kick, blasting the ball past Renny Vega to send his side into Sunday’s final against Uruguay in Buenos Aires.

Venezuela were desperately unlucky not to win the match. They hit the woodwork three times and improved as the match went on against a Paraguay side who had midfielder Jonathan Santana sent off in the first period of extra time.

After the match a fight broke out on the pitch involving players and coaching staff from both teams.

Copa hosts Argentina ousted by Uruguay

Ref: Uruguay knocked hosts Argentina out of the Copa America on Saturday after goalkeeper Fernando Muslera saved Carlos Tevez’s spot kick to give his side a 5-4 win on penalties.

Uruguay had taken an early lead through Diego Perez before the midfielder was sent off seven minutes before halftime. Argentina equalised through Gonzalo Higuain and saw Javier Mascherano red carded shortly before the end of the 90 minutes. The match produced no more goals in extra time and finished 1-1.

Brazil beats Ecuador 4-2 to reach Copa quarters

Ref: Alexandre Pato and Neymar scored two goals each as defending champion Brazil defeated Ecuador 4-2 to reach the Copa America quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Brazil finished first in Group B and will play Paraguay in the next round. Ecuador was eliminated.

Bangladesh trounce Pakistan 3-0

Ref: Bangladesh tore Pakistan apart by 3-0 in the first-round clash of the World Cup pre-qualifying match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium here on Wednesday.

In the most dramatic of starts, Bangladesh forward Jahid Hasan Emile scored the first goal in the 36th second of the match.

New football coach reaches Dhaka

Ref: New coach of Bangladesh national football team Macedonian Nikola Ilievski has reached Dhaka.

On his arrival on Friday afternoon, Ilievski told reporters: “Aggressive football is my philosophy as it’s a goal making game. It’s never possible to score goal without playing aggressively.”

Ref: Arsenal’s title hopes took another blow when they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Liverpool on Sunday after an astonishing finale in which both teams convert stoppage time penalties.
