REF: The death toll in the clash between law-enforcing agencies and people protesting against alleged rape of a woman in Tangail has risen to three.
Deputy Commissioner Md Mahbub Hossain said barber Shyamal Das, 15, died when he was taken to Dhaka on Friday.
Hossain also announced Tk 50,000 compensation for each of the families of the three dead in the clash.
Kalihati Upazila Health Complex’s Dr Mahfiza Yasmin said ‘Shamim’, 32, and ‘Faruq’, 35, were injured when police fired rubber bullets and charged baton on the protesters.
Faruq died in the health complex and Shamim on way to Tangail Medical College Hospital.
Those sent to Tangail Medical College Hospital with bullet injuries were identified as ‘Shamim’, 30, Samir Paul, 25, Yusuf Sayeed, 28, ‘Rubel’, 30, Liton Sutradhar, 25, and Shamsul Haque, 25.
Anjali Paul, 40, who was injured by a brickbat, was also admitted to the hospital.
The clash erupted when police acted to disperse the protesters on the Tangail-Mymensingh Highway at around 4pm.
The agitators blocked the highway in protest against the reported rape of the woman in front of her son.
They responded to the police action by pelting brickbats.
The BGB and RAB joined the police later.
Locals said a 17-year-old daily-wage labourer of Ghatail Upazila developed a relationship with the wife of one Rafiqul Islam Roma of Kalihati.
Roma’s wife fled with the teen recently.
Roma and his family invited the youth and his mother to their house for a ‘discussion’ on Tuesday.
The youth alleged Roma and his brother-in-law ‘Hafiz’ beat them up after pulling down their clothes and raped his mother.
Police rescued them later on getting information.
The youth spoke to reporters at Ghatail Upazila Health Complex.
His mother filed a case against Roma, Hafiz, and another person under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at Kalihati Police Station on Wednesday.
Sub-Inspector Abul Bashar claimed the victim brought charges of sexual harassment, not rape.
Roma and Hafiz were arrested on Thursday, he said.
