DU expels 4, BCL follows suit

Ref: Authorities at Dhaka University have expelled four activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League for attacking six journalists who protested harassment of a female student.


Chhatra League, student wing of the ruling party, on Monday expelled three of them and another.

The university authorities on Monday also asked the four to show causes and explain why they will not be expelled permanently.

The expelled students are Mahidul Islam Mahi, a second year student of public administration department, Sohel Rana, a second year student of peace and conflict studies department, Mohammad Rubaiyat Shahnewaz, a second year student of philosophy department, and Nazmul Hasan Rumi, second year student of economics department.

DU proctor K M Saiful Islam Khan told bdnews24.com that the three students were expelled on charges of attacking the six journalists.

Although the Chhatra League at first rejected the accused as their activists, later they expelled three of the four from the organisation.

The Chhatra League, a student wing of the ruling Awami League, also expelled Riad Mahmud, a second year student of Bangla department, from their organisation for his involvement in the incident.

All the expelled students are BCL activists of Poet Jasim Uddin Residential Hall unit.

The hall unit BCL general secretary Kazi Enayet confirmed the expulsion to reporters.

Enayet said that earlier Mahi was expelled from BCL orally for his alleged involvement in a clash. “Mahi has now been expelled in black and white.”

He, however, said that another expelled student Sohel Rana was an activist of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of main opposition BNP.

On Sunday, the journalists were beaten up severely for protesting harassment of a female student of Rokeya Hall at Dhaka University around 9pm in Teachers-Students Centre area.

They are Radio ABC’s Shakil Hassan, Channel I’s Shefaul Islam, Jamuna TV’s Sabbir Ahmed, New Age’s Tauhid Ahmed, Monir Mamtaz of Saptahik 2000 and ‘Habib’ of Barta24.

The journalism department student of Rokeya Hall, requesting anonymity, said some stalkers including Jasim Uddin Hall BCL activist Mohidul Islam Mahi, ‘Rubaiyat’ of philosophy, ‘Sohel’ of Bangla and one ‘Rumi’ harassed a her.

When the girl protested, the stalkers became extremely abusive. She then asked her friends for help. An altercation broke out between the police when her friends arrived on the scene and further protested against the behaviour of the hecklers.

Central BCL leaders including office secretary Nasim-Al-Momin Rupak, Siddique Nazmul Alam, DU unit organising secretary Joydev Nandi later came to the scene and helped bring the situation under control.

But, later on, Mahi with 20-25 cadres attacked journalists in front of the BCL leaders.

On Sunday night, members of the university’s journalist association met vice-chancellor A A M S Arefin Siddique and demanded exemplary punishment of the attackers.
