Low-priced laptop to hit market in June

Ref: The much-talked-about low-priced laptop of government’s telephone industry will hit the local market in June, said the Telecommunications Minister.

Minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju said Telephone Shilpa Sangstha, an industrial unit under the Ministry of Telecommunications, “is now working hard to introduce such an easily affordable laptop”.

The minister came up with the disclosure while lunching a magazine “Telco Voice” published by Telecom Reporters Forum at a ceremony held at Dhaka Club Sunday.

Speaking as chief guest the minister disclosed that the top four mobile operators of the country would have to pay Tk 15,000 crore for renewing their licenses.

The four mobile companies are Grameen Phone, Robi, Banglalink and Citycell. The deadline for renewing their licenses would expire in November this year.

“But these mobile-phone operators refrained from paying huge sums of money for long,” the minister said.

In reply to a query the minister assured: “We are hopeful about reaching a solution soon as we already talked to them.”

Mentioning the success of the government in the Post and Telecommunications sector, the minister claimed that the government had already modernized the postal department.

In this regard, he also said, “E-centers will be introduced at more than 8,000 post offices across the country while videoconferences will also be conducted from all the DC offices soon.”

Post and Telecommunications Secretary Sunil Kanti Bose, members of the parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry Whip ASM Firoz, Moazzem Hossain Ratan and Khaled Mahmud Chowdhury and BTRC Chairman Zia Ahmed were among others present on the occasion.
