Ref: US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Robert O Blake held a parley with opposition leader and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Saturday evening at her Gulshan office, discussing matters of bilateral interest, including the Grameen Bank issue.
Blake reached the BNP chief’s Gulshan office at around 7pm, accompanied by US Ambassador James F. Moriarty.
BNP standing committee member and ex-minister Dr. Osman Farruk, chairperson’s adviser Riaz Rahman and Sabih Uddin Ahmed attended the meeting.
Robert O Blake left the office shortly after 8 pm. While emerging from the meeting, he faced reporters.
Replying to a question Blake said, “Dr. Muhammad Yunus is an honorable man. We want the matters resolved in an amicable way.”
The US State Department executive added: “Our stance regarding him is clear.”
Matters related to counter-terrorism, anti-terrorism, and bilateral issues were discussed at the meeting, said meeting sources.
Robert O Blake arrived at noon to begin a four-day visit to Bangladesh with a significant agenda of business that includes his audience with country’s top politicians.
He came to Dhaka on the second leg of his three-nation tour of China, Bangladesh and Kazakhstan.
Foreign Ministry and US Embassy sources told banglanews that the American foreign ministry functionary would meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Sunday.
